SC.912.L.18.9_Explain the interrelated nature of photosynthesis and cellular respiration
Photosynthesis and Respiration are interrelated!
- The products of photosynthesis are the reactants of cellular respiration.
- The reactants of Photosynthesis are the products of cellular respiration.
- The 2 reactions are backwards
Photosynthesis•Converts energy to food
•Performed by autotrophs •Takes place in the chloroplast •Reactants: CO2, H2O, and Light Energy •Products: O2 and C6H12O6 (aka- glucose… FOOD!) |
Cellular Respiration•Converts food into energy
•Performed by heterotrophs and plants •Takes place in the mitochondria •Reactants: Glucose (C6H12O6) and O2 •Products: CO2 , H2O, and ATP (energy!) |
Aerobic Respiration
Anaerobic Respiration
Anaerobic respiration is a type of respiration that:
1. Breaks down sugars without oxygen
2. Yields 2 net ATP molecules and high energy electron carrier molecules
3. Happens in the cytoplasm of cells
4. Includes the following steps:
- Glycolysis
- Fermentation
*There are two types of fermentation as shown in the picture to the right.
- Alcoholic Fermentation
glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide (+ energy released)
- Lactic acid
glucose → lactic acid (+ energy released)
Myth: This funny video proposes that animals are drunk due to over-eating the ripe marula fruit, which fermentation inside the digestive system of this animal producing alcohol.
Research: this article from National Geographic makes reference to research that contradicts it, but I think it's still funny. What do you think?
